follow-up comment on last post

follow-up comment on last post I cant let this go Andreas wrote a follow-up to my last post and found a commercial for Skittles where a guy has an amazingly creepy personal brand and shows it off in an interview. Its worth the 60 seconds to watch. Then he goes on with a personal story about a job interview he was in and only could answer with 3 responses (it was in Spanish and he doesnt speak Spanish). It was a 30 minute interview (ever get the feeling the interviewer on the other side of the table hasnt a clue whats going on?) and has some sage wisdom at the end. Check it out here! How to Get Over a Job Search Slump If you think of your job search like a sport, then it is natural to expect peaks and valleys in your own performance. Still, there is nothing more draining, humbling and dispiriting than consistent rejection and non-responsiveness during a job search. Ive learned that when interviewing, challenges or problems will always arise and there are two ways to deal with them: the effective way and the ineffective way.    The effective way is to assess where you are, determine where you want to be in your career, identify and implement creative solutions, and remain resilient. Knowing that, here are some key tactics to deal with a slump in your job search: 1) Understand that setbacks are temporary and work to increase your confidence level: People who are confident that they will succeed persist longer in the face of difficulty and will ultimately reach their goals.    Unfortunately, poor job search performance can fill a job seeker with self doubt and lack of belief in their ability to successfully navigate the open job market. Prior to tweaking your resume, practicing interviewing or altering your search methods, it’s imperative to restore and increase your confidence levels.    One of the most effective ways to do so is to reflect on your past successes. When you find yourself full of self-doubt, take a moment to recall (as vividly as possible) some of the goals you have achieved and the obstacles you overcame to to do it. 2) Analyze the situation from the view point of the recruiter or hiring manager: Be honest with yourself.    If you were the recruiter or hiring manager of the positions you apply to, would you be interested in your resume and cover letter? Are you truly applying to jobs and tailoring each application?    Or are you sending out reams of resumes hoping something will stick?    Are you connecting with the right headhunters and hiring managers and bringing something to the table?    Or are you simply relying on others to find you your next job? Because it’s easy to apply for positions via the web, companies and staffing firms receive mass amounts of applications per open position.    If you were the hiring manager would you be more interested in the job seekers who took the time to research your website and thoroughly read over the description or the applicants who seemingly put little to no effort in the application process? 3) Have an exact goal in mind and relentlessly pursue that objective Spell out exactly what you want to achieve.    Without firm goals, job seekers are much from prone to wasting valuable time applying to the wrong positions with the wrong resume. Take some time and spell out what type of position you want, what industry you want that job to be in, what type of company you wish to work for and what date you aim to start the job.  Then, begin to tweak your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile according to plan. Only when you get specific about the desired outcome of your search, will you know the proper steps you need to take in order to get there. Many companies have positions that are dormant. This could be for a myriad of reasons they’ve unsuccessfully posted the position, couldn’t find an efficient recruiting firm or just have not had the time to actively search lately. What exactly is consulting? As Kantar Consulting is a global business â€" with offices in London, New York, Amsterdam, Singapore and more the client list is extremely varied. One day you might be coming up with innovation strategies for a major toy company, and the next you may be examining how customers engage with fashion. He says: “We work with them to decide what is absolutely crucial for their people to learn, then we develop the learning material both for eLearning as well as classroom teaching. In a couple of months, we will be going to their offices around Europe to deliver the training to over 1500 of their brand managers.” How can consultancy develop my career? Book review Smart mobs - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Stuffs changing all around us. New technologies are changing the way we work, interact and even how we conduct our courtship rituals. From I-mode services in Japan to the hitech millieu of Scandinavia to president-toppling demonstrations in Manilla to cyborgs in the US who want to merge body and machine. And much of this change goes unnoticed or is rapidly integrated in our lives and taken for granted. Imagine a group of people united in some cause. The cause can be anything from celebrity spotting in New York to anti-WTO demonstrations in Seattle. Now imagine the same group of people always connected to the net, to each other, always able to monitor opponents and competitors. Thats a smart mob. And trying to predict how people will act and interact when wireless networks, constant internet access, camera video phones etc. become widespread is the aim of this book, Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution by Howard Rheingold. One of the books central concepts is that these new technologies should be managed as common resources, ie. available equally to anybody, with all the advantages and pitfalls this entails. A common resource is prone to overuse by unscrupulous individuals, eg. the way internet is abused by spammers who can mainly operate because sending emails is virtually free. However, a common resource also comprises a fertile basis for innovation and development, the prime example of this being (again) the internet. Just look at all the services that exist on the internet, freely competing because nobody owns the net. The last few chapters of the book are rather bleak. Here Rheingold describes the negative scenarios. Constant digital surveillance. The entertainment industry managing to outlaw or heavily regulate file sharing and peer-to-peer networking. Big companies limiting the use of ?their? part of the internet to the services they provide. This is chilling reading, but it shows us where the fight is fought today, and what we must look out for. The book manages to be remarkably up-to-date, considering the fast-changing nature of its subject. Some examples of smart mobs that have emerged since the book came out is the Howard Dean presidential campaing in the US which is grass-roots driven via the net and Malaysia recognizing divorce by SMS. As Piet hein said, ?Its always difficult to make predictions, especially about the future?, but Rheingold manages to clearly lay out the driving principles and forces of many technologies and social trends. Food for Thought - Five things that are working Changing your perspective This is an addendum to an earlier post. In a recent (January 29, 2007) Time Magazine article entitled, The Brain: A users guide,” it talked about the power of your thoughts and the influence they have on your life and actual brain structure. (I couldn’t help but notice how the Law of Attraction principles, as explained in the movie The Secret, continue to go mainstream. I love it!) Here’s the bottom line from the article: Mental training has the power to change the physical structure of the brain. I find this fascinating! When I first heard about the Law of Attraction, I thought it was about being Pollyanna and saying everythings OK when it isnt. That didnt feel right. What Ive since learned is that its your attitude and your perception of something that makes all the difference (mental training). Its about looking at a situation in a way that enables you to work through it, see the silver lining, or move around it if its an obstacle. Try this experiment: First, write down 5 things that are working in your life. From your health, your job anything that’s working well and you are grateful for. Starting by focusing on what’s working gets your brain into a more positive mental state; an “attitude of gratitude.” Next, write down 5 things in your life that aren’t working. Then ask yourself, is there anything good about these things? Could there possibly be a silver lining? Or are these things I need to work through or around, and how can I do that? As you examine the things that aren’t working in your life, from a more positive mental place, you have an opportunity to change your perspective by changing your thinking.
